Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope - 27/4600.02

Proof that a chronograph can be beautifully calm, the Junghans max bill Chronoscope (ref. 27/4600.02) brings Max Bill's minimalist vision to a stopwatch complication. Its matt silver-plated dial keeps only what matters, with a minute track and hands treated with environmentally friendly luminous substance, and by leaving out the small seconds display Junghans achieves a strikingly symmetrical face.

At its heart is the self-winding J880.2 caliber, offering a stop function and a date along with up to 48 hours of power reserve. The 40mm stainless steel case stands 14.4mm tall and is protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, while a leather strap with a stainless steel buckle keeps the look classic. Water resistant to 5 bar, this automatic chronograph is a design statement you can time your day by.

Timepiece History

Junghans traces its roots to 1861, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law set up a workshop in Schramberg, in Germany's Black Forest, to make components for clocks, and the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had become the world's largest watch factory, and in 1918 Arthur Junghans completed the nine-tier Terrassenbau, a terraced factory designed to bring daylight to every workplace that now houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans still crafts its watches in Schramberg.

From 1961, the Swiss designer and Bauhaus student Max Bill designed wristwatches for Junghans, following a kitchen clock he created for the company in the early 1950s. His design for the max bill line has stayed virtually unchanged since 1961, and the Chronoscope applies the same thinking to a chronograph, keeping only the essentials so the dial remains as calm as the time-only models.
